Galvus General Information
Galvus is a medication that is used for the control of type 2 diabetes. This medication is manufactured by Novartis. The active ingredient is vildagliptin. Its chemical name is (S)-1-[N-(3-hydroxy-1-adamantyl) glycyl] pyrrolidine-2-carbonitrile. Its molecular formula is C17H25N3O2 and it has a molecular weight of 303.399 g/mol. The tablets come in doses of 50 mg each. In addition to the active ingredient, the tablets also contain sodium starch glycolate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and anhydrous lactose. Galvus belongs to a class of medications called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors. As the name suggests, it works by inhibiting the action of the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 and increases the levels of incretin hormones called galvus-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP). These in turn increase insulin production and reduce the production of galvus. In this way, it helps to control sugar levels. Galvus can be used alone or in combination with other diabetes drugs. The medication should be taken as prescribed by the doctor. It can be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time every day. This will keep blood levels of the active ingredient at a constant level and will also help you remember to take the medication daily. There may be some side effects like headaches, nausea, and dizziness initially but they fade as the body adapts to the medication. Serious side effects like vision changes, liver problems, and allergic responses require immediate medical attention. |
